Church Leader Caught Body-Shaming Teen Girl At Choir Practice – “Fat Girls Don’t Wear Shorts”

Jenna (@roo_jenna) was doing one of her all-time favorite things, singing with the church choir, when she took a bathroom break to check her phone. A family member was suffering from a brain aneurysm and she wanted to know if there were any updates.

The 19-year-old from Swansboro, North Carolina was in complete shock when she realized a church leadership member followed her into the bathroom to do nothing more than ridicule her about her weight and clothing choice.

The brash woman proceeded to insult the young woman for wearing shorts, calling her “fat”.

Unbeknownst to the church leader, her entire rant was being filmed by the young lady – go Jenna!

Jenna switched her phone to record and captured the shocking moment on tape. The incident has since gone mega-viral on Twitter.

You can hear the woman tell Jenna that she’s “too fat” to be wearing shorts that short. Telling her to dress more like another young lady in the choir who was wearing a knee-length dress.

“She’s a chubby girl,” the lady barks. “She’s got a dress on that’s appropriate, it comes down to about the top of her knees.”

From there you hear a clearly insulted Jenna respond through tears: “So you’re sitting here calling me fat?”

To which the older woman replies (with hands on hips): “Oh, you don’t think you are?”

Jenna admits getting a little heated at this point – telling the woman that she loves who she is and doesn’t think she’s “fat,” amid a few curse words.

Cursing or not, Jenna had every right to be upset. Plus, she said she was already in a vulnerable place worrying about her sick family member and she never expected to be insulted like this, especially not in her Church.

The altercation eventually spills out into the hallway where other people can hear what’s going on. You can hear a man telling Jenna to “go back into the bathroom.”

Jenna’s shorts are 100% appropriate, in fact, her mom bought them for her. and she looks great in them!

She posted a photo of the exact outfit she was wearing on Twitter:

@roo_jenna

“My mother bought me these shorts and she would never call me fat.”

Jenna also pointed out the irony of the shirt she was wearing at the time of the attack. “Also please read my shirt because what she did was not agape love,” Jenna writes.

Agape: 1-God, unconditional and unending love.

She also included a note detailing more about the incident and the woman behind it, including: “She is a leader in our church and actually speaks on the behalf of our church at different conferences!!!!!”

Thankfully, Jenna’s pastor has said that she will never hold “any sort of committee/any leadership role in our church ever again.”

Jenna later revealed this woman is notorious for acting like this behind closed doors and then acting all “holy” in front of the congregation. She knew she had to capture the moment on film so the pastor and other church members would believe her.

After the whole thing unfolded, the woman went around telling people that it was Jenna’s fault; “and that I will never get back up on that stage to sing again,” Jenna wrote.

The pastor has since responded to the incident, sending out a letter to his congregation and the surrounding community.

In the letter he calls Jenna a “very gifted young lady” and cites how the worship leader “body-shamed [her] for her appearance.”

@roo_jenna

“We are shocked and saddened by this act. The Church is supposed to be a place of safety, love and acceptance,” the letter reads.

He continued, “Our goal is to provide the emotional and spiritual support they need to cope with this spiritual woundedness and also make sure that a just resolution takes place.”

Jenna still loves her Church and does not want anyone to bully the congregation or pastor.

“Since some of you found the church, also please don’t be a bully back nothing will be solved from that… an eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind.”

@roo_jenna

The situation wasn’t easy for Jenna who admits: “If she would have said that to me two years ago when I was in therapy for suicide… I honestly don’t think I would be here today…”

@roo_jenna

Jenna’s post has received love from people all around the world – including celebrities.

Of course, that doesn’t make the sting any less brutal. Yet, take heart, Jenna, the whole world is on your side. You keep rocking those shorts, you gorgeous singing goddess, you!
