Everyone has their own energy level.
Some of us are naturally very outgoing and lively.
Others are much more reserved and cautious.
Most of us fall somewhere in between.
Unfortunately, some people are incapable of generating their own positive energy and draw it from other people instead.
Just as mythical vampires need blood from their victims, these individuals drain others of their energy. In spiritual and self-development circles, they are known as “energy vampires.”
It’s important to know how to spot an energy vampire and learn how to defend yourself against them.
So, how do you know whether you have energy vampires around you?
1. You feel drained:
This is the key sign.
Energy vampires literally leave you feeling sucked dry.
You might notice that carrying out day-to-day tasks feels more difficult than usual, or that you need more sleep.
You might also turn to comfort eating or caffeine to stave off tiredness.
2. You have vague aches and pains that don’t seem to have any discernible cause:
When you’re low on energy, it isn’t just your spirit that suffers.
Your body will also show the strain.
Random aches and pains are a classic sign of energy depletion, anxiety, and depression.
3. You are more cynical, judgmental, and pessimistic than usual:
Energy vampires are usually irritable, downbeat, and see the worst in everything and everyone.
If you spend enough time with them, you’ll take on the same characteristics.
4. You feel as though there is a lot of drama all around you:
Energy vampires tend to thrive on excitement and drama.
They have a habit of destabilizing relationships, spreading gossip, and fostering mistrust.
If there are energy vampires in your social circle, you’ll feel as though there is a new kind of tension in your friendship group.
5. You have started to question your own judgment:
Some energy vampires suffer from low self-esteem, hence their need to feed off other people’s energy.
In an attempt to make themselves feel better, they might start to criticize your life choices, your personality, and opinions.
Over time, this can erode your sense of self.
So, how can you get rid of energy vampires?
Your first weapon is a set of firm boundaries.
Refuse to engage with someone who is consistently negative.
Don’t overreact or argue if they try to provoke you.
Use neutral phrases like “Uh huh,” “Yeah, I see” or “I get you.”
An energy vampire doesn’t want to have a meaningful debate with you – they just want to feed off your reactions. Do not give them that satisfaction.
No one has the right to demand your attention or order you around.
Some energy vampires can be highly charismatic and convincing, so it may come as a surprise to them when you stand your ground.
In fact, they might back down and move on to another victim when they realize that you aren’t going to let them walk all over you.
Your second weapon is creative visualization.
Visualize a radiant white shield or bubble around your body if you are in the presence of an energy vampire.
This will help deflect their negative energy.
This exercise will also improve your mood and raise your own energy levels, which is a powerful deterrent.
Devote regular time to meditation, reflection, and general self-development.
The stronger your self-esteem, the easier it is to set boundaries and to realize when you are being manipulated.
Learn to appreciate your good qualities, forgive yourself for your mistakes, and adopt the belief that no one has the right to treat you badly.
Journaling can be a helpful tool for working through difficult issues from your past.
Affirmations can also provide you with an effective boost.
Simple phrases like “I choose to stay happy” and “I choose to protect my energy” can keep you grounded and remind you not to sink to the vampire’s level.
However, the best approach is to avoid contact with them wherever possible.
This can be challenging, particularly if you happen to be related to them, but your health and sanity must come first.
Energy vampires can change, but they first have to accept that their behaviors are toxic.
This is usually a long process – and it isn’t your responsibility.
When dealing with energy vampires, your duty of care is to yourself.
There is no reason why you should ever subject yourself to negativity.
Focus instead on cultivating relationships with people who leave you feeling uplifted.
Life is too short to spend time with people who harm your spirit.
