5 Things You Can Do to Lift Your Spirits When You Feel Like Giving Up

Life’s challenges never seem to come one at a time.

It feels like everything piles up all at once and you have a million fires to try and put out while balancing plates on a tightrope.

It can feel overwhelming and it can be very tempting to give up and let everything come crashing down. But you can’t.

Taking some time to do self-care will help lighten your load and rejuvenate you for continuing the balancing act and moving forward.

“Self-care” can seem like a heavy term;

it conjures up images of taking a spa day or a lengthy vacation, and while those are forms of self-care they are on the extreme end.

You don’t have to set down all your obligations in order to provide self-care.

There are many small, simple things you can do every day within your routine to lift your spirits and give you the care and motivation you need to keep going.

Here are 5 things you can do to lift your spirits when you feel like giving up:

1. Treat yourself to your favorite meal.

It is amazing what a little comfort food can do.

Treating yourself doesn’t mean that you have to choose something unhealthy, your favorite meal or dish might be great for you—it’s just something that you haven’t taken the time to enjoy in a while which is why it is a treat.

While it is important to keep everything in moderation, (you don’t want to reverse the hard work you’ve done on your diet or healthy eating lifestyle,) treating yourself to your favorite meal is a nice way to put a little extra effort toward yourself.

When we have busy schedules or have other people we need to provide care for, our own needs can fall to the wayside.

Diners and full meals are typically the first things we give up in order to spare time.

It may take a little extra effort to make your favorite dish or to go out and enjoy someone else making it, but it’s extra effort that will pay off.

Treating ourselves to our favorite meal or dish will benefit us both in body and mind. We will have had a full meal that we enjoy, and it will make us happy to indulge in ourselves and what we love.

2. Go for a walk.

Getting some fresh air and a change in scenery for 30 minutes can do wonders to lift your spirits.

Seeing nature, or people watching, can be a wonderful distraction from our own troubles.

Going for a walk helps to get out of our heads for a while and clears our minds.

The increase in oxygen and cardio will help us feel better, rejuvenated, and reduce our stress.

It also physically changes where we are which can alleviate the pressure we might feel in a certain environment such as sitting at our desk all day at work or being at home for long periods of time.

3. Take a break.

It’s so easy, yet we forget to do it.

We might have deadlines at work or evenings packed with extracurricular activities, and in favor of getting everything done we forget to take a break.

We will work through our lunches, grab dinner on the way to somewhere else, and not take a load off our feet until it is time for bed.

Stopping at least once during the day and taking a 15-30 minute break will do wonders.

Set whatever you are working on aside, and take a break for yourself.

Play on social media, read a book, watch a movie, go for a walk, or just sit down and enjoy your meal without multitasking.

Just take a break.

Preferably three.

4. Try something new.

We can get so locked into our routines that we forget or choose not to try new experiences.

Part of the fun of life is getting to try new things.

Try a new restaurant, take a dance class, see a movie you’ve never heard of, be a tourist in your own city.

Trying something new doesn’t have to be over-the-top or expensive, it can be something you do in your own home like trying a new hobby.

Do something different to break yourself free from the same old, same old.

5. Spread positivity.

Getting bogged down in our own struggles, we can forget the wonderful things around us.

A great way to lift your spirits when you feel like giving up is to spread positivity.

Not only will you make others feel better, but you will remind yourself of all the things you love and can find joy in without having to go beyond what you do every day.

Give sincere compliments to people—strangers, co-workers, or close friends and loved ones.

Don’t just compliment their appearance, but their qualities you admire and respect.

Find the little things that bring you joy and spread more of it.

If you love flowers, then bring some into your house or office.

If you love music, grab your headphones and listen to your favorite tracks.

Tell people what they mean to you, and appreciate all the victories you have in your life: big and small.

Doing little things to lift your spirits will help you to feel more empowered to keep going and pushing through, even when you feel like giving up.

Taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be time consuming or expensive. The best things to make yourself feel better are the little things you can do throughout the day.
