Few creatures are more adorable than a big blubbery sea lion – especially when they beg for snacks.
A few years back, I remember seeing one hanging off the back of a fishing boat in Cabo San Lucas while the people onboard tossed fish into his mouth – ADORABLE.
Needless to say, this footage of a huge sea lion wandering into a fish market looking for some fish stole my heart, along with the hearts of thousands of people who have watched the video on Facebook.
Humans are all about making things more convenient, hence the invention of stores. It appears sea lions would like to get in on the action.
This South American sea lion could smell the fishy fragrance wafting off of this onshore fish market, and so he decided to try his luck and take a trip inside. Knowing how cute he is, he must have known it would work.
To his amazement, there were more fish waiting inside than he ever could have hoped for! Piles and piles of delicious grub.
The big ball of blubber shuffled his way over to the men tasked with working on the fish, in hopes they’d be willing to spare a few his way.
He was rather considerate about the whole thing, patiently waiting and slowly edging his way closer and closer to the work table.
Lucky for him, one of the workers was feeling generous and decided to toss him more than a few fish to satisfy his hunger.
The first fish really whet his appetite and led him to believe that this man was his ticket to even more food. And so, the sea lion continued to follow the worker with his eyes, waddling behind him and following his every move.
The worker couldn’t resist giving him more fish.
While the adorable scene unfolded, the workers continued boxing fish into crates. The worker with a sea lion on his tail tried to remain as productive as possible while navigating around the big blubbery cutie-pie behind him.
It didn’t take long for the sea lion to gain attention from everyone at the market. A crowd begin to gather round and people became rather entranced by the smart sea lion who had picked the perfect pit stop for lunch.

Without doubt, this sea lion continued to beg and snack after the video comes to an end – and chances are he’s been back since!
Some facts about the South American sea lion….
The South American sea lion, also known as the Southern Sea Lion and the Patagonian sea lion, lives on the Peruvian, Ecuadorian, Chilean, Argentinean, Southern Brazilian, Falkland Islands, and Uruguayan coasts.
Male South American sea lions are considered the lionesque of the eared seals because of their large head and well-developed mane – which is clear on this fish-loving dude who wandered into the right market.
Males can weigh up to 770 pounds and grow over 9 feet long, while females can weigh up to 330 pounds.
The South American sea lion enjoys a wide variety of fishes, including anchovies and Argentine hake. They are also quite fond of octopus and squid.
When they struggle to get their fins on some fish, they will resort to eating small penguins.
They typically hunt within five miles of the shore where they reside, but they will travel farther out if needed to find some grub.
Numbers of South American sea lions dramatically dropped over the last twenty years due to human interaction. Many fishermen have killed these sweet creatures, frustrated that they often damage their fishing nets in pursuit of fish.
Thankfully, the South American sea lion is no longer considered a threatened species. According to recent estimates, there are around 265,000 of them in existence today.
There are several groups actively working to ensure their habitat remains protected, while striving to address issues related to water pollution and global warming – both of which adversely affect sea lion populations.
